New WhatsApp Tools to Beat Messaging Scams

News Desk

Islamabad: In a world increasingly reliant on digital communication, criminal scammers are constantly adapting to exploit economic anxieties.

From pyramid schemes to crypto fraud, scammers prey on people through cleverly crafted messages and platforms designed to deceive. In response, WhatsApp is ramping up its efforts to detect, disrupt, and dismantle these operations.

WhatsApp has announced significant progress in its ongoing fight against scam operations. In the first half of this year alone, over 6.8 million accounts linked to scam centers—often tied to organized crime and forced labor in Southeast Asia—were banned before they could be fully operationalized.

“These scam centers are sophisticated and run multiple fraud campaigns simultaneously,” WhatsApp said in a statement. Popular scams include fake crypto investments, rent-a-scooter pyramid schemes, and tasks-for-cash hoaxes.

Scammers typically initiate contact through dating apps or text messages, then shift victims across multiple platforms—such as social media, messaging apps, and crypto exchanges—to obscure the scam and avoid detection.

Big Tech Collaboration Disrupts Int’l Fraud Rings

In one notable case, WhatsApp teamed up with Meta and OpenAI to disrupt a criminal scam center based in Cambodia. The scammers used ChatGPT to craft messages that linked victims to WhatsApp, where they were lured into a fake TikTok “like-for-pay” scheme. Victims were then pushed to Telegram and ultimately asked to invest real money into bogus crypto accounts.

The coordinated effort reveals how scammers misuse AI tools and exploit platform interoperability to build credibility and pressure users into sending money.

New Anti-Scam Tools from WhatsApp

To counter such tactics, WhatsApp has introduced two major updates designed to improve user protection:

Group Messaging Safeguards:

A new safety overview screen now appears when someone not in your contacts adds you to a group. It includes group information and actionable safety tips. Users can exit instantly or review the chat context—notifications remain muted until the user opts to stay.

Individual Messaging Alerts:

WhatsApp is testing features that alert users before chatting with unknown contacts. These warnings will include additional context to help users decide whether to proceed, especially if the conversation began outside WhatsApp.

Expert Tips to Recognize Scams

WhatsApp has partnered with Rachel Tobac, an ethical hacker and internet safety expert, to educate users on identifying suspicious behavior. Her advice follows a simple three-step strategy:

PAUSE: Don’t rush. Consider whether the number is familiar or the request seems legitimate.

QUESTION: Is the offer realistic? Are they asking for money, gift cards, PIN codes, or urgent action?

VERIFY: If someone claims to be a family member or friend, confirm their identity using a different contact method—such as a phone call or known email address.

Stay Vigilant, Stay Safe

With online scams becoming increasingly elaborate, WhatsApp urges its users to stay alert and cautious. “We’ve all received those too-good-to-be-true messages,” the platform emphasized. “Taking a few moments to pause, question, and verify could be the difference between safety and falling victim to a scam.”

As scammers evolve, so too must our digital defenses. WhatsApp’s latest updates are a welcome step toward making everyday messaging safer for everyone.
