New Instagram Map Launches Location Sharing Is Optional
News Desk
Islamabad: Instagram has introduced a new feature called Instagram Map, similar to Snapchat’s Snap Map. It lets users explore location-based Stories and Reels, and optionally share their recent location with friends.
After viral social media posts sparked privacy concerns, Instagram head Adam Mosseri clarified that location sharing is off by default and only visible to others if you choose to share it — and even then, it requires double confirmation.
What Instagram Map Does — and What It Doesn’t
You can access Instagram Map through your Direct Messages (DMs) by tapping the “Map” option at the top. When opened, a pop-up explains that your location is private unless you explicitly share it.
A common misunderstanding comes from users seeing their own location on the map and assuming others can too. In reality, the map also displays content from public Stories or Reels that have a tagged location — a feature Instagram has offered before, now made more accessible.
Important: Location Sharing Is Not Real-Time
If you enable location sharing, your position only updates when the app is open or running in the background. Unlike Snap Map, Instagram Map does not update your real-time location continuously.
How to Manage Your Instagram Map Settings
- Open the Map
- Go to your DMs and tap the “Map” option at the top.
- Read the Pop-Up
- First-time users will see a notice confirming your location is private unless shared.
- Choose Who Can See Your Location
- You can select specific friends to share with — or choose not to share at all.
- These settings can be changed anytime via the Map feature.
Tips to Protect Your Privacy
- Avoid tagging your current location in Stories or Reels until you’ve left the place.
- Regularly check who has access to your shared location.
- Keep location sharing turned off if you’re not actively using the feature.
Bottom Line
Instagram Map helps users discover nearby content more easily, but sharing your location is entirely optional. With the right privacy settings, you can explore the feature without compromising your real-time whereabouts.
