NDMA Puts Northern Areas on Alert Amid Intense Monsoon Forecast

Islamabad: A fresh spell of intense monsoon rains is set to lash northern Pakistan from July 28 to 31, raising concerns over potential urban flooding, glacial lake outbursts, and landslides in Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), and Chitral Valley, according to the latest weather advisory issued by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

The NDMA has urged residents in vulnerable regions to remain alert, avoid non-essential travel, and strictly follow safety advisories. Citizens are encouraged to stay informed through the “Pak NDMA Disaster Alert” mobile app and official updates from local authorities.

The NDMA’s National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC) has placed several districts of Gilgit-Baltistan and AJK on flood alert due to the expected heavy downpours.

According to NEOC forecasts, rain is expected in Gilgit, Skardu, Hunza, and Shigar in Gilgit-Baltistan, while Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, and Bagh in AJK may also receive heavy showers during the period. These conditions could lead to flash floods, while hilly areas face a heightened risk of landslides.

In Chitral Valley, especially in Buni and Reshun, a combination of rainfall and glacial melt is likely to increase the flow of the River Chitral, further escalating the flood threat. Urban flooding is also anticipated in Muzaffarabad and Bagh due to persistent downpours.

In response, the NDMA has directed all concerned departments and emergency services to ensure full preparedness, keep machinery and rescue teams on standby, and maintain high alert for any emergencies.

Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs) and local administrations have been instructed to take timely preventive measures to minimize potential damage and ensure public safety.
