NDMA Prepares for Rain-Related Emergencies in Punjab, Sindh

News Desk

Islamabad: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has reported heightened activity from the eastern Indian side, indicating intense cloud bursts that could impact areas in Pakistan.

According to a recent press release, repeated early warnings have been issued to all provinces, forecasting moderate to heavy rainfall starting on July 2, 2024, particularly affecting the upper catchments of major rivers such as the Sutlej, Ravi, and Chenab.

Additionally, the NDMA has alerted about potential lightning strikes in South and Central Punjab, as well as Islamabad, expected from July 5 to 7.

These conditions may lead to rapid rises in water levels, flash floods, and urban flooding. The NDMA emphasized the risk of flooding in the River Sutlej, with water levels anticipated to reach low flood levels (approximately 50,000 cusecs) by July 5 and high flood levels (around 120,000 cusecs) by July 10, 2024.

In response, the NDMA is collaborating closely with federal and provincial departments to ensure preparedness and effective response measures.

The public is urged to remain vigilant, adhere to local authorities’ instructions, stay informed through the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert mobile app for timely updates, and monitor weather reports closely.

It is advised to develop an evacuation plan with family members, identify safe locations, and prepare emergency kits containing essential supplies. Travelers are advised to avoid unnecessary trips during heavy rainfall and potential flood conditions.
