NDMA Issues Weather Alert: Urban Flooding, GLOF Risks Till August 3
News Desk
Islamabad: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a weather advisory warning of potential urban flooding, flash floods, landslides, and glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) in various parts of Pakistan through August 3.
According to an NDMA spokesperson, heavy monsoon rains are expected to cause urban flooding in multiple cities, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sialkot, and Khushab.
Rising water levels in local streams such as Bein, Basantar, and Deg may worsen the situation.
In Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, the forecast indicates intense rainfall over the next 12 to 24 hours, with a high risk of flash flooding in low-lying areas and landslides in mountainous regions.
Affected districts may include Chitral, Dir, Swat, Kalam, Mansehra, and Battagram. Additional showers are likely in Abbottabad, Haripur, Swabi, Mardan, Peshawar, and Charsadda, while heavy rain is also predicted in Kohat, Hangu, Bannu, Lakki Marwat, and Dera Ismail Khan.
The NDMA has also warned of possible GLOF events in glaciated areas of Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa due to accelerated glacier melt triggered by rising temperatures and precipitation.
Authorities have been directed to remain on high alert and ensure all necessary precautionary and preparedness measures are in place to minimize the impact of any potential disasters.
The NDMA has urged citizens to stay informed through official weather updates and cooperate with local authorities during emergencies.
