NDMA Issues Flood Warning as Heavy Rains Expected Countrywide
News Desk
Islamabad: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a nationwide advisory warning of potential flooding and hydrological hazards as a fresh westerly wave is expected to bring intense rainfall to upper and central regions of Pakistan from August 5 to August 10.
The advisory, issued through NDMA’s National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC), highlights the risk of rising river flows, urban flooding, and localized flash floods in vulnerable regions. The public and relevant authorities have been urged to remain on high alert during this period.
According to NDMA, medium to high flood levels are likely in the River Chenab at Marala, Khanki, and Qadirabad, while River Jhelum and its tributaries upstream of Mangla may also reach high flood levels. River Kabul at Nowshera is expected to rise to low flood stage, and River Swat, Panjkora, and related streams and nullahs may experience medium flows due to continuous rainfall in catchment areas.
In Gilgit-Baltistan, water levels in Rivers Hunza and Shigar are anticipated to increase, with the risk of flash floods in tributaries including Hispar, Khunjerab, Shimshal, Braldu, Hushe, and Saltoro. In Balochistan, stream networks in Musakhel, Sherani, Zhob, and Sibi districts are also expected to swell due to anticipated rainfall.
Major dams and barrages across the country are currently experiencing low flood levels. However, rising inflows could elevate the flood situation. Tarbela Dam is at 90% of its storage capacity, while Mangla Dam stands at 60%, with further increases expected.
Urban centers, especially in northeastern and central Punjab, have been advised to ensure the availability of dewatering equipment to prevent waterlogging. Authorities are also advised to prepare for potential inundation in low-lying areas.
The NDMA has issued the following public safety guidelines:
Remain alert near rivers, nullahs, and flood-prone zones.
Avoid travel on flooded roads, bridges, and causeways.
Refrain from crossing water channels, especially during high flow.
Prepare emergency kits with dry food, clean drinking water, medicines, and essential items.
Move livestock, vehicles, and valuables to higher ground.
Follow instructions issued by local authorities and emergency services.
The public is encouraged to stay informed through television, radio, mobile alerts, and the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert mobile app, which provides real-time updates and safety instructions.
NDMA emphasized that it is closely monitoring the evolving weather conditions through its NEOC and is in constant coordination with provincial and district disaster management authorities to ensure timely, proactive responses and mitigation efforts.
