NCSW Condemns ‘Inhumane’ Arrest of Women, Journalists
News Desk
Islamabad: The National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW) has strongly condemned the reported detention of women activists and journalists by Islamabad Police ahead of the Aurat March rally, describing the action as a violation of fundamental rights.
In a statement on Saturday, the Commission said several women leaders and activists were detained near Super Market in Sector F-6 while gathering to proceed to the National Press Club for the peaceful rally marking International Women’s Day.
Authorities reportedly cited Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code and the lack of a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to declare the assembly unlawful.
The NCSW called the treatment of the women “inhumane and indecent,” highlighting that these activists have long advocated for women’s rights, justice, and equality in Pakistan. The Commission stressed that participation in peaceful civic activities is a fundamental right and should not result in arrests or degrading treatment.

The statement also condemned the arrest of three journalists on duty, noting that detaining media personnel undermines press freedom and the public’s right to information. The NCSW urged authorities to ensure that all detainees are treated humanely, provided access to legal counsel, and allowed communication with their families.
Chairperson of the NCSW reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to monitoring the situation and safeguarding the dignity, safety, and fundamental rights of women in Pakistan. The body emphasized that legal measures must not be used to intimidate women activists or journalists exercising their constitutional rights.
The incident has drawn criticism from civil society groups, who view it as part of a broader pattern of restricting peaceful protests and suppressing voices advocating gender equality.
