Nation mourns passing of Senator Irfan Siddiqui

Islamabad:The National Assembly on Tuesday offered Fatiha for the departed soul of Senator Irfan-ul-Haque Siddiqui, a renowned columnist, political commentator, and senior leader of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), who passed away in Islamabad on Monday after a brief illness.

On the request of the chair, Syed Imran Ahmad Shah led the Fatiha. Members from across party lines paid tribute to the late Senator, acknowledging his contributions to politics, journalism, and literature.

President Asif Ali Zardari expressed profound grief over Senator Siddiqui’s demise, lauding his “invaluable services for democracy in Pakistan.” He extended condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for peace for the departed soul.

Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Faisal Karim Kundi also expressed deep sorrow, terming Senator Siddiqui “a seasoned intellectual and a principled parliamentarian.” He said the Senator’s services in politics, journalism, and literature would always be remembered.

JUI-F Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman called Senator Siddiqui’s death a “significant loss for Pakistan’s political and intellectual community,” describing him as “a man of knowledge, refinement, and dignity—a rare combination of intellect and public service.”

Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi said Senator Siddiqui was a “wise politician, patriotic leader, and man of letters” who played a valuable role in strengthening democracy and promoting national unity.

Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq paid glowing tribute to the late Senator, describing him as a “wise, principled, and visionary leader” who promoted tolerance and dialogue in national politics. “The void created by his demise will be difficult to fill,” he said.

Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Professor Ahsan Iqbal said the death of Senator Siddiqui was “an irreparable loss to the country’s literary, intellectual, and parliamentary circles,” praising him as a prolific writer and patriotic intellectual.

Senator Irfan Siddiqui had served as Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on National Affairs and was the Parliamentary Leader of PML-N in the Senate. His legacy as a scholar, writer, and statesman will continue to inspire generations.
