Zaidi’s selection was made by an independent jury consisting of distinguished figures from journalism, academia, and the arts, underscoring the significance of his contributions.
Zaidi’s courageous stance dates back to the oppressive regime of General Zia ul Haq, during which he endured public flogging as a journalist.
He has consistently championed press freedom and free speech, becoming a symbol of resistance against authoritarianism.
Despite being in his 70s, Zaidi’s advocacy for journalists’ and media workers’ rights has remained steadfast.
As the Secretary General of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ), he has not only led demonstrations on the streets but also pursued legal avenues to uphold these rights.
Nasir Zaidi’s tireless efforts and lifelong commitment to advancing freedom of expression make him a deserving recipient of the Ahfaz ur Rahman Award, recognizing his invaluable contributions to journalism and human rights in Pakistan.
The Ahfaz-ur-Rahman Award, named in honor of the renowned journalist, poet, writer, and activist Ahfaz-ur-Rahman, is sponsored by the Rahman family and embodies a commitment to political and cultural freedom, diversity, and creativity.
This prestigious accolade recognizes exceptional individuals who have advanced these vital causes. Veteran journalist and media rights activist Nasir Zaidi will be the esteemed recipient of this award, to be presented at a ceremony held at the Karachi Arts Council on April 20th.
