More Rain, Snowfall Expected Across Pakistan from Sunday

Islamabad:  A fresh westerly weather system is expected to enter the western parts of the country on Sunday night (January 25) and move towards the upper regions by Monday, bringing widespread rain, wind, thunderstorms, and snowfall across large parts of Pakistan through Tuesday.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), rain and wind-thunderstorms with snowfall are expected in most parts of Balochistan from Sunday night and Monday.

The affected areas include Quetta, Ziarat, Chaman, Pishin, Qilla Abdullah, Qilla Saifullah, Noshki, Harnai, Zhob, Kalat, Barkhan, Sibbi, Loralai, Turbat, Gwadar, Jiwani, Kech, Awaran, Chaghi, Panjgur, Khuzdar, Washuk, and Kharan.

Upper Sindh, including Sukkur, Larkana, Jacobabad, and Dadu, is also likely to receive rainfall on Monday.

The system is expected to intensify over the upper parts of the country on January 26 and 27, resulting in rain, wind, and thunderstorms with snowfall, including a few spells of heavy snowfall, in Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Areas likely to be affected include Diamir, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Ghanche, Shigar, Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Poonch, Hattian, Bagh, Rawalakot, Haveli, Chitral, Dir, Swat, Kalam, Shangla, Kohistan, Battagram, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Buner, Peshawar, Nowshera, Swabi, Malakand, Mardan, Kohat, Kurram, Khyber, Hangu, Bajaur, Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan, and Waziristan.

Rain with snowfall is also expected in Murree, Galliyat, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Chakwal, Attock, Mandi Bahauddin, Sialkot, Narowal, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Gujrat, Sargodha, Mianwali, Gujranwala, Multan, Layyah, Bhakkar, and Dera Ghazi Khan, with occasional breaks.

The Met Office warned that heavy snowfall could lead to road closures and slippery conditions in hilly areas, including Naran, Kaghan, Dir, Swat, Kalam, Chitral, Kohistan, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Shangla, Astore, Hunza, Skardu, Murree, Galliyat, Neelum Valley, Bagh, Poonch, Haveli, and parts of northern Balochistan from January 26 to 27.

There is also a risk of landslides and avalanches in upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir during the forecast period.

Tourists have been advised to remain extra cautious and avoid unnecessary travel, while daytime temperatures are expected to drop across many regions. 

All concerned authorities have been directed to remain vigilant and take necessary precautionary measures to prevent any untoward situation during the forecast period.
