Monsoon Rains Set to Intensify Across Pakistan from July 5

Islamabad: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast a significant intensification of the monsoon system across the country starting from the evening of July 5, warning of widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, and potential flash floods and urban flooding in multiple regions.

According to the PMD, moist monsoon currents are already penetrating various parts of the country and are likely to gain strength over the weekend, while a westerly wave is expected to approach the upper parts of the country on July 6, further enhancing rainfall activity.

Forecast Details by Region

From July 5 to 10, heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is expected across multiple regions of Pakistan. In the northern and northeastern areas, including Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, Rawalakot, Swat, Dir, Malakand, Kohistan, Chitral, and surrounding locations, intense monsoon activity is anticipated.

In Gilgit-Baltistan, areas such as Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, and Astore are likely to experience rainfall from July 6 to 10. The Punjab region, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, and other districts, is forecast to receive widespread rain and thunderstorms with heavy falls during the same period. In southern Punjab, districts like Multan, Bahawalpur, and Dera Ghazi Khan may receive rainfall between July 6 and 8.

Meanwhile, southern and northeastern Balochistan, including Loralai, Khuzdar, and Lasbella, are expected to witness rain-thunderstorms from July 3 to 4 and again from July 6 to 8. In Sindh, moderate rain with isolated heavy falls is likely in Kara

Alerts and Possible Impacts

The PMD has issued a high alert for several areas, warning of the following hazards between July 5 and 8:

Flash floods in local streams and nullahs in Murree, Galliyat, Kohistan, Abbottabad, Buner, Chitral, Swat, Manshera, Islamabad/Rawalpindi, parts of Punjab, Kashmir, and Balochistan.

Urban flooding in low-lying areas of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sialkot, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Peshawar, Nowshera, and Mardan from July 6 to 8.

Landslides and mudslides may cause road closures in vulnerable hilly terrains of KP, Murree, Galliyat, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan.

Strong winds and lightning could damage weak infrastructure such as mud houses, electric poles, solar panels, billboards, and parked vehicles.

Public Advisory

Farmers are urged to plan their agricultural activities in light of the weather forecast.

Travelers and tourists have been advised to avoid unnecessary movement in vulnerable areas during the wet spell.

All relevant civic and disaster management authorities have been put on high alert and directed to implement precautionary measures to reduce the risk of casualties or damage.
