Between July 16 and 17, intense rainfall lashed major cities in Punjab, including Rawalpindi, Jhelum, and Chakwal, leading to dangerously high water levels in rivers and streams.
Rawalpindi experienced 255 millimeters of rainfall in just 15 hours, pushing the Nullah Lai to critical levels. In Chakwal, a cloudburst resulted in 423 millimeters of rain, causing the collapse of a dam embankment and triggering severe flooding.
Thousands of electricity consumers in Rawalpindi, Jhelum, and Chakwal were left without power as flash floods destroyed transformers, power poles, and transmission lines. The dam breach submerged numerous areas, bringing life to a standstill.
In Chakwal alone, 22 small dams overflowed due to the intense downpours. The collapse of the Panwal Dam released a dangerous flood wave that swept away two vehicles and three people. While two individuals were rescued, one remains missing.
