Monsoon Alert: PDMA Issues Warnings for Punjab and KP

Lahore/Peshawar: The Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMA) of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) have issued separate weather alerts as both provinces brace for a fresh spell of monsoon rains from July 11 to 17, raising fears of flash floods, urban flooding, and landslides.

Punjab Braces for Widespread Thunderstorms and Flooding Risks

According to the PDMA Punjab, thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds are expected across numerous districts, including Rawalpindi, Murree, Attock, Chakwal, Gujranwala, and Faisalabad.

Heavy rainfall with thundershowers is likely in Okara, Khushab, Sargodha, Bhakkar, and Mianwali. Meanwhile, southern Punjab, including Bahawalpur, DG Khan, Multan, and Rahim Yar Khan, may witness thunderstorms between July 13 and 17.

PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia has instructed all commissioners and deputy commissioners to remain on high alert. Acting on directives from the Punjab Chief Minister, the authority has warned of potential flash floods and rising water levels in rivers and streams. Emergency preparedness advisories have been issued to departments including Health, Irrigation, Local Government, Livestock, and C&W.

Citizens are urged to stay indoors during thunderstorms, avoid low-lying areas, and refrain from unnecessary travel. Parents are especially advised to keep children away from water bodies and electrical installations. In case of emergency, the PDMA helpline 1129 is available for assistance.

KP Faces Flash Flood and Landslide Threats

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast a similar monsoon impact in KP, where moisture-laden currents and an incoming westerly wave are expected to trigger heavy rainfall, lightning, and gusty winds from July 11 to 17.

Districts including Chitral, Swat, Dir, Mansehra, Peshawar, Kohat, and D.I. Khan are expected to be hit, with particular risk of flash flooding in mountainous and vulnerable areas like Galliyat, Mansehra, and Kohistan. Urban flooding is anticipated in Mardan, Nowshera, and Peshawar, while riverine flooding could affect the Chitral, Swat, Panjkora, and Kabul rivers.

The KP PDMA has alerted all deputy commissioners and advised citizens in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and follow official advisories. Residents are encouraged to take timely precautions to ensure safety during this period of intense monsoon activity.

Both provinces are urging cooperation from the public as authorities prepare for potential emergencies during the week-long weather event.
