‘Monkey Business’ Roars Back as Yasir Hussain Drops Reel

Karachi: Pakistani actor, playwright and director Yasir Hussain has kicked off promotions for the Karachi return of his hit stage comedy Monkey Business with a light-hearted, humorous reel that quickly caught attention online.

Posted on Instagram on Monday, the video opens with Hussain calmly sipping chai before shifting to a montage of the play’s cast members attempting exaggerated on-camera laughs — some convincing, others intentionally over the top.

The playful contrast sets the tone for the upcoming season, highlighting the show’s trademark blend of simplicity and sharp comedic timing.

The reel features Khizr Ansari, Sajeel Meer Kazmi, Asiyah Majeed, Gul, Bilal Yusufzai, Yusra Irfan, Umer Aalam, Osama Bin Atiq, Abdullah Wahab and several others who make up the new ensemble.

Announcing the fresh run, Hussain captioned the post, “Karachi are you ready for Monkey Business 2.0? Starting from 9th of December at the Arts Council Karachi.”

Monkey Business 2.0 marks the production’s second stint in Karachi after touring Lahore, Faisalabad, Islamabad and Karachi earlier this year. The show originally premiered on April 5, 2025, and has since maintained strong momentum with consistent audience turnout.

The comedy, built around the escalating fallout of one man’s lies, follows Mr. Waseem — played by Hussain — who fabricates a story to secure an arts grant, only to be overwhelmed by surprise visits, meddling characters and spiralling misunderstandings.

The play is noted for its physical humor, brisk pace and sequences where Hussain and co-star Umer Aalam don women’s attire for Bollywood-inspired performances.

The production has drawn widespread praise from celebrities across Pakistan’s entertainment industry. Fawad Khan, Humayun Saeed, Kinza Hashmi, Hasan Raheem, Mehwish Hayat, Javed Sheikh, Zahid Ahmad, Bushra Ansari, Sonya Hussyn, Mohib Mirza, Sanam Saeed, Ahad Raza Mir, Ushna Shah, Fahad Mustafa, Aiman Khan, Faisal Qureshi, Agha Ali, and Hussain’s wife Iqra Aziz are among those who have publicly lauded the show.

With Monkey Business 2.0, Hussain continues to reaffirm his commitment to Pakistani theatre at a time when many fear for the future of stage comedy.

His renewed presence on stage — backed by an energetic young cast — has helped draw fresh attention to homegrown theatrical productions and sparked renewed interest in live comedy in the country.
