Modi’s BJP Wins, Majority Reduced
News Desk
New Delhi: India’s Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his allies appeared poised for victory in the country’s general election count on Tuesday, although they faced a reduced parliamentary majority as the opposition performed better than expected.
While commentators and exit polls had predicted an overwhelming victory for Modi, his campaign’s focus on wooing the Hindu majority raised concerns among the country’s more than 200 million Muslims about minority rights.
For the first time in a decade, Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) might not secure an outright majority on its own, according to projections from the election commission, meaning it would need to rely on its alliance partners.
The main opposition Congress party was on track to nearly double its parliamentary seats, a significant turnaround largely driven by strategic alliances to field single candidates against the BJP’s formidable electoral machine.
