Mild Earthquake Jolts Lahore, Parts of Punjab
News Desk
Lahore: A mild earthquake shook Lahore and several cities across Punjab early Tuesday, prompting residents to rush out of their homes in fear.
According to the National Seismic Monitoring Centre (NSMC) in Islamabad, the earthquake measured 4.4 on the Richter scale. Its epicentre was located 25 kilometres south-southwest of Lahore at a depth of 14 kilometres, with coordinates 31.33°N and 74.23°E.
Tremors were reported in Lahore, Sheikhupura, Okara, Kasur, and surrounding areas. Although the quake lasted only a few seconds, it caused panic among citizens concerned about possible aftershocks.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) confirmed the seismic activity. Emergency and rescue services were placed on alert as a precautionary measure, though no immediate damage or casualties were reported.
Seismologists explain that earthquakes in Pakistan are primarily due to its location near the boundary of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, making the region susceptible to frequent seismic disturbances.
