Islamabad: Renowned meteorologist Anjum Nazir Zaigham has called for better planning and legislation to mitigate the effects of smog, which he described as the result of years of accumulated pollution.

Zaigham explained that smog’s primary causes, including crop residue burning and industrial emissions, are often misunderstood, with vehicle fuel being a major contributor to the sulphur levels in the air.

He advocated for the use of cleaner fuel options to reduce air pollution and recommended mass tree plantation to counter the harmful impacts of climate change.

Health expert Dr Haroon Hameed echoed Zaigham’s concerns, noting that air quality indices in some Pakistani cities have reached dangerous levels.

Smog has caused serious health issues, particularly in children, affecting respiratory organs and increasing the risk of paralysis among adults. The experts emphasized the need for immediate, comprehensive action to reduce smog levels and protect public health.
