Sargodha: The escalating mental health crisis in Pakistan demands urgent collective action to raise awareness and break the stigma surrounding mental illness, according to noted psychiatrist Dr Ali Zulqarnain.
Speaking to APP on Thursday, Dr Zulqarnain emphasized the importance of educating the public about mental health, especially as October 10 marks World Mental Health Day each year. He warned of the devastating consequences of remaining silent on mental health issues.
“There is a critical need to dismantle the barriers that prevent individuals from seeking help, starting with addressing stigma and promoting awareness,” he said.
“We must educate communities, normalize conversations about mental health, and foster empathy.”
Dr Zulqarnain also called for prioritizing mental health equity to ensure that all individuals, regardless of their background, socioeconomic status, or geographic location, have access to quality care.
He highlighted that timely diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions are crucial in preventing further deterioration and related issues. However, major challenges, including delayed treatment due to a lack of awareness and the stigma attached to mental illness, continue to hinder effective mental healthcare.
“It is alarming that every tenth person in Pakistan suffers from some form of mental illness, yet millions remain undiagnosed and untreated,” Dr Zulqarnain lamented.
He stressed that addressing mental health issues is essential for improving the overall well-being of society.
