‘Mass Gmail Data Breach Exposes 183 Million Accounts’

News Desk

Islamabad: Gmail users have been warned of a major security breach that may have left as many as 183 million email accounts vulnerable.

The leaked data, which includes both email addresses and associated passwords, could allow hackers to access not only Gmail accounts but also other online accounts that rely on the same login credentials.

The breach occurred in April this year but was recently highlighted by Have I Been Pwned, a website that tracks data breaches to alert affected users. Troy Hunt, who runs the site, said the data originated from a larger hack aggregated from multiple sources across the internet.

Users can check whether their accounts were affected — or if their credentials appear in any other tracked breaches — by visiting the Have I Been Pwned website. The platform has documented 917 breached websites and more than 15 billion accounts.

For those affected, experts recommend changing Gmail passwords immediately and enabling two-factor authentication. This additional security layer ensures that even if a hacker obtains a password, they cannot access the account without a second verification step. Google’s two-step authentication offers multiple challenge options, selecting the method most likely to prevent unauthorized access. Input from Independent.
