Marine Experts Discover Huge Underwater Mountain

California: A group of marine researchers have made a shocking find deep in the Pacific Ocean; it is the tallest mountain ever seen.

According to the Schmidt Ocean Institute based in California, this underwater mountain which rises to 3,109 meters is located about 1,448 kilometers from the coast of Chile.

The massive landform towers above Mount Olympus in Greece and has within its surroundings an array of ancient coral reefs and unusual sea species.

The mountain was discovered during a 28-day mission conducted by Schmidt Ocean Institute using R.V Falkor (To) research vessel. A highly advanced underwater sonar system was then employed by the team that made it capable of creating a very detailed topographical map of the seabed which also revealed the concealed peak.

According to Jyothika Virmani who serves as Executive Director at the Schmidt Ocean Institute, sonar systems are used to accurately measure depth using sound waves. “We can make very detailed maps of the seabed by analysing how long sound waves take to get down and back again” she said.

This discovery comes at a time when it is only 26 percent of oceans that have been mapped out so far yet they cover 71 percent of Earth’s surface.
