March 23 Celebrations Shift to Flag Hoisting Only
News Desk
Islamabad: The federal government has announced that the traditional Pakistan Day military parade on March 23, 2026, will not be held due to the ongoing energy crisis caused by conflicts between Iran, the US, Israel, and other Gulf Arab countries.
Officials confirmed that, in light of the changing international situation, all formal ceremonies have been cancelled. Instead, the day will be observed nationwide with simple and dignified flag-hoisting ceremonies. The decision aims to align national celebrations with Pakistan’s current economic and logistical realities.
Pakistan Day, which marks the historic Lahore Resolution of 1940, is traditionally celebrated in Islamabad with large-scale military parades, aerial flypasts, and cultural displays. However, this year, officials said the focus will shift to modest celebrations that emphasize national unity and independence.

Authorities cited recent attacks on Gulf energy infrastructure and disruptions to oil and gas supplies through the Strait of Hormuz, which have led to rising global oil prices, directly affecting energy-dependent countries like Pakistan. Measures have been taken to secure energy supplies and explore alternative sources during this crisis.
Despite the parade’s cancellation, flag-hoisting ceremonies will continue at federal buildings, schools, and public spaces across the country. Officials stressed that the spirit of Pakistan Day, commemorating freedom and unity, will be preserved, even on a smaller scale.
The decision reflects a balance between maintaining tradition and addressing the practical challenges posed by the current energy shortage.
