Malaria, Dengue Prevention Campaign Begins in Umerkot

Umerkot: The Umerkot district health department has launched a week-long public awareness campaign to prevent malaria and promote precautionary measures, in line with directives from Director General Health Sindh, Dr. Waqar Mehmood Memon.
The campaign, running from August 11 to 17 across Sindh, aims to prepare communities ahead of the upcoming malaria season.
In Umerkot, activities are being carried out in schools, colleges, universities, as well as urban and rural areas, with support from the National Rural Support Programme (NRSP), People’s Primary Healthcare Initiative (PPHI), and the Vector Borne Diseases (VBD) section of the health department.

Residents are being advised to use mosquito nets, install window and door screens, and apply mosquito repellents, especially from sunset to sunrise. Authorities also recommend covering standing water with used car oil, white sand, or soil to prevent mosquito breeding.
Pregnant women, children, and anyone showing symptoms such as fever are urged to undergo free malaria testing at government hospitals. District Health Officer (DHO) Dr. Muhammad Ali Nohri called on the education department, NGOs, and the media to collaborate in spreading awareness.
According to the health department, 88 hospitals in Umerkot — including 68 government and 20 private facilities — have been equipped to provide free malaria diagnosis and treatment. “We request the public to fully cooperate with our teams so that we can make this campaign a success,” Dr. Nohri said.
Dr. Muhammad Afzal Focal Person VBD, Naveed Ahmed Jarwar Monitoring Officer ,Ali Nawaz District Coordinator, Bhora lal Malaria Superidentant and others were also present on the occasion.
