London Law Firm Accidentally Divorces Unintended Couple

Islamabad: A London law firm’s inadvertent error led to the divorce of the wrong couple, and unfortunately, it cannot be rectified.
Despite recent efforts to bring the matter before a senior judge, the decision remains irreversible. The judge cited the paramount importance of maintaining public trust in genuine and conclusive divorce orders.
The mix-up occurred when solicitors at a prestigious London law firm inadvertently selected the wrong couple from a dropdown menu. Referred to as Mr. and Mrs. William by the court, the couple, who had been married for 21 years, found themselves legally separated when they were only in the process of finalizing financial arrangements for their separation.
The mistake occurred when a clerk at the law firm mistakenly accessed their final divorce order through an online portal, completing the process in just 21 minutes. Sir Andrew Macfarlane, President of the Family Division, emphasized the significant public policy interests at stake and upheld the principle of finality in divorce orders.
A spokesperson for the law firm acknowledged that one of their solicitors accidentally selected a couple who were not intending to divorce via the online portal. Despite the firm’s subsequent efforts to seek annulment through the High Court, the application was ultimately rejected.
