Lives Lost, No Accountability’: Kundi, Ibadullah Demand CM’s Resignation

Islamabad: Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Faisal Karim Kundi and Provincial Assembly Opposition Leader Dr. Ibadullah on Saturday voiced strong criticism over the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government’s decision to prorogue the provincial assembly session, calling it a blatant defiance of the Supreme Court’s ruling and an evasion of constitutional responsibilities.
In a joint meeting held in Islamabad, the two leaders expressed serious concern over the indefinite postponement of the KP Assembly session, terming it a deliberate attempt by the provincial government to avoid parliamentary scrutiny in the wake of critical developments, including the Swat river tragedy.
“The prorogation of the assembly session is not only a constitutional breach but also a calculated move to escape accountability on the reserved seats issue and the government’s broader failures,” said Governor Kundi.
Both leaders condemned the recent tragedy in Swat, where 18 tourists lost their lives after being swept away by flash floods. They held the provincial government, particularly Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, directly responsible for the loss of lives, citing the CM’s direct oversight of the tourism department.
“Merely suspending local officials and rescue personnel is an eyewash. The Chief Minister must take moral and administrative responsibility for this tragedy,” said Dr. Ibadullah, demanding Gandapur’s immediate resignation.
They slammed the KP government for its failure to ensure basic safety infrastructure, enforce regulations, and issue timely warnings to tourists visiting flood-prone areas. The leaders stressed that the Swat tragedy was not a natural accident but a man-made disaster fueled by poor governance and environmental mismanagement.
They further urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to announce immediate financial compensation for the families of the victims and to ensure a transparent probe into the incident.
“Lives have been lost due to the government’s negligence. Accountability must begin at the top, not end with scapegoating lower-tier officials,” said Governor Kundi.
The leaders also reiterated their call for the full implementation of the Supreme Court’s orders on the reserved seats issue and demanded the restoration of parliamentary debate on urgent matters of public interest.
