Lightning Strikes Burj Khalifa as Heavy Rains Hit UAE

News Desk

Islamabad: A rare and dramatic lightning strike hit the top of Dubai’s Burj Khalifa on Thursday, highlighting the intensity of unstable weather conditions sweeping across parts of the United Arab Emirates.

The moment was captured on video and shared by Dubai Crown Prince and UAE Defence Minister Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The footage shows the world’s tallest tower silhouetted against thick, green-tinged storm clouds as a bolt of lightning strikes its spire during heavy rainfall.

The striking scene came as authorities warned residents to brace for continued rain. A day earlier, Sheikh Hamdan had posted weather updates on social media, sharing visuals of dense cloud cover moving across desert areas and a meteorological map forecasting rain activity over the coming days.

According to the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM), the UAE entered the peak phase of the Al Bashayer low-pressure system on Thursday, December 18. The system, extending from the Red Sea, has created unstable atmospheric conditions across the country.

Several areas beyond Dubai were also affected. Parts of Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah reported heavy rainfall accompanied by hail, while thunderstorms and lightning were observed in isolated locations.

Meteorologists said the weather pattern is expected to produce clouds at different altitudes, leading to varying rainfall intensity and the possibility of thunderstorms and hail in limited areas.

Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious, follow official weather advisories, and take safety measures as the unstable conditions continue.
