LHC Upholds Jail, Fine for Second Marriage Without Consent
News Desk
Lahore: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Thursday dismissed an appeal filed by a man convicted of contracting a second marriage without the consent of his first wife, upholding his three-month imprisonment and Rs1 million fine.
During the hearing, Chief Justice Aalia Neelum questioned the petitioner’s counsel on whether the aging of a wife could be considered a valid reason for a second marriage.
“If women also start doing this, what will happen to society?” the Chief Justice remarked, emphasizing that no justification could override the legal requirement of obtaining prior permission before entering into another marriage.

The convict’s lawyer argued that the man had first married in 1999 and contracted a second marriage in 2017.
He added that his client had filed a claim to settle matters with his first wife. However, when asked whether this claim was submitted before or after the second marriage, the lawyer failed to give a clear answer.
The bench ruled that the arguments presented carried no merit and upheld the trial court’s sentence of three months in prison along with a fine of Rs1 million.
