Lahore: Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) President Mian Abuzar Shad has voiced serious concerns over escalating environmental issues, particularly smog and water scarcity.

Highlighting the severity of the current smog crisis, Shad referenced London’s 1952 fog disaster and urged swift action to address the situation in Lahore.

Shad noted that traffic, industrial emissions, and stubble burning in neighboring areas are key contributors to Lahore’s smog. He proposed the formation of a “Clean Punjab Commission” to devise actionable solutions.

Among his recommendations were improvements to public transportation, the relocation of goods transport operations, and the promotion of eco-friendly fuels.

He also emphasized the need for large-scale tree planting to improve air quality. Turning to the water crisis, Shad warned that Pakistan could face severe water shortages by 2040.

He advocated for the construction of the Kalabagh Dam, primarily for water storage, to help recharge groundwater resources.

Shad urged stakeholders to collaborate for a sustainable future, warning that failure to act now could lead to irreversible environmental and economic consequences for Pakistan.
