Lawmakers Rally Behind Trump Amid Ballot Controversy

News Desk

Islamabad: Republican lawmakers are rallying together in a substantial gesture for former President Donald Trump this holiday season.

Following the Colorado Supreme Court’s decision to block Trump from the state’s 2024 primary ballot, GOP members are uniting to show support and signal to their constituents that this ruling is unacceptable.

The Colorado Supreme Court, divided on the matter, ruled Trump ineligible for the presidency based on the Constitution’s insurrection clause. This move removes him from the state’s presidential primary ballot and sets the stage for a likely showdown in the nation’s highest court to determine if the GOP front-runner can stay in the race.

The court overturned a district judge’s ruling that acknowledged Trump’s alleged role in the Capitol attack but didn’t bar him from the ballot, citing ambiguity about whether the provision applied to his presidential candidature.

Interestingly, this decision allows the Colorado GOP to potentially revert to a caucus-assembly system, previously criticized by Trump supporters in 2016 as undemocratic and favoring party elites. State Chairman Dave Williams is advocating for a caucus-only system if Trump is excluded from the ballot.

Republicans argue against unelected activist judges dictating Trump’s ballot status, suggesting that voters should decide instead of letting partisan agendas interfere. They stress consistency in letting democratic processes prevail over judicial or party interference.
