PCB Demands Apology Over Fake News Targeting Cricketer
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Thursday strongly condemned what it called “agenda-driven fake news” targeting the character of a national cricketer, demanding a public apology from the reporter responsible.
In a statement, the PCB described the circulation of unverified claims as “unacceptable” and warned that legal action would be taken if the journalist failed to comply.
“Agenda-driven fake news targeting the character of our players is unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” the PCB said. “The reporter must publicly apologise without delay; failing which, the PCB will take all necessary steps to ensure such malicious conduct is dealt with firmly.”The controversy began when a local news outlet alleged that a Pakistani cricketer had engaged in inappropriate behavior at a hotel, claiming a formal complaint had been lodged with the team management. The report suggested that the player had violated team rules, prompting immediate internal review.
Following an assessment of the details provided by the hotel and a preliminary investigation, the management concluded that the player had breached the code of conduct and imposed a fine. However, both the PCB and the cricketer quickly dismissed the claims as baseless.
Cricketer Mirza also took to social media, denouncing the report as “cheap journalism” and confirmed he would pursue legal action against the news outlet. “Any media house cannot air unverified news,” he wrote on Facebook.
The PCB’s response highlights its commitment to protecting players’ reputations from misinformation, emphasizing accountability and swift action against the spread of fake news in the media.
