Lahore: Lahore has been nominated to compete for the prestigious title of the 2027 ECO Capital of Tourism.

A 25-member delegation from the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) is set to visit Lahore on April 13, 2025, where the announcement regarding the city’s candidacy will be made.

This honor, which has previously been awarded to Samarkand in Uzbekistan and Erzurum in Turkey for 2025, is part of the ECO’s annual initiative to recognize one of its member cities for its cultural and tourism potential. The ECO includes ten member countries: Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.

Lahore’s inclusion in this competitive race is particularly significant given the city’s rich historical, cultural, and tourism heritage. The city’s nomination for the title is seen as a significant step in promoting Pakistan’s national heritage and increasing its visibility on the global tourism stage.

Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb noted that if Lahore secures the ECO Capital of Tourism designation, it would be a major milestone in advancing the promotion of Pakistan’s diverse cultural history.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, who invited the ECO ambassadors to the city, emphasized the importance of showcasing Lahore’s historical, cultural, and civilizational vibrancy to the world. She expressed that Lahore’s inclusion in the nomination process was an important step toward boosting tourism both for the country and the province.

The ECO Capital of Tourism program, launched in 2019, aims to spotlight the historical, cultural, and tourism potential of cities across the ECO region on the global stage. The decision regarding the 2027 title will be made during a meeting of the ECO Permanent Representatives Council, which will be hosted by the Punjab Chief Minister at the Civil Secretariat.

During their visit, the ECO delegation will have the opportunity to explore several historical sites in Lahore, including the Walled City and other cultural landmarks, as well as the Safe Cities Authority. A luncheon will also be held in their honor at the Governor’s House.
