Kohli & Rohit Keep Retirement Plans Under Wraps After India’s Victory

Islamabad: Virat Kohli responded to rumors about his retirement following India’s victory in the Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai on Sunday.
Reports in the Indian media had suggested that Kohli, along with captain Rohit Sharma and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, might retire from ODI cricket after the tournament. Some speculated that the three senior players could announce their retirement from the 50-over format, similar to their decision to retire from T20 Internationals after the T20 World Cup 2024.
After India’s triumph in the Champions Trophy final, Kohli addressed these rumors. When asked about his future in the team and the squad’s prospects following his retirement, Kohli did not confirm any retirement plans. However, he did reassure that the Indian team was in good hands.
“I try to talk to these guys as much as I can, share my experiences, and explain how I’ve managed to play for so long. I step in wherever I can to help improve their games. Ultimately, as the saying goes, when you leave, you want to leave the team in a better position,” said Kohli.
He added, “Our goal is to ensure that when we do eventually step away, the squad is ready to take on the world for the next 8-10 years. These guys definitely have the talent to do so.”
Similarly, Rohit Sharma, India’s captain, did not provide any indication of his plans regarding retirement after leading the team to victory in the Champions Trophy 2025. In a post-match conversation, Rohit spoke about his aggressive batting style in the powerplay.
“To come out here and have the result go our way is a great feeling. I’m very, very happy. (On his approach) It’s not something that comes naturally to me. When you’re trying to do something different, you need the support of the team and management.
They’ve been with me all the way. I spoke about this with Rahul (Dravid) bhai during the ODI World Cup, and he was fully on board. Now, Gauti (Gautam Gambhir) bhai is as well,” he shared.
