Kerala: A child’s request for biryani and chicken fry instead of the usual upma at his anganwadi (childcare center) has prompted the Kerala government to reconsider its meal options. The child’s video, which went viral on social media, has sparked a broader discussion on food quality and variety in government-run childcare centers.

In the video, the kid, identified as Shanku, tells his mother he wants “birnani” (biryani) and “poricha kozhi” (chicken fry) instead of upma. His innocent request resonated with many, drawing widespread support for better meal diversity in anganwadis.

Responding to the viral clip, Kerala’s Health, Women, and Child Welfare Minister, Veena George, shared the video on her Facebook page and announced that the government would review the anganwadi menu, taking Shanku’s suggestion into account. She emphasized the government’s commitment to nutritious meals for children and highlighted the successful introduction of eggs and milk in anganwadis.

The public reaction has been overwhelmingly positive, with many social media users offering to send biryani and chicken fry for Shanku. Some have even suggested reallocating food resources from prisons to improve meals in childcare centers.

The incident has reignited discussions on the importance of diverse and nutritious food options for children, with growing support for policies that prioritize both health and taste in anganwadi meals.
