Karachi Hit by Rain, Roads Flooded Amid Monsoon Alert
News Desk
Islamabad: Heavy rain was reported in several areas of Karachi, including Model Colony in Malir, on Tuesday morning, while other parts of the city experienced scattered showers.
Sharea Faisal, Shah Faisal Colony, the airport, and nearby residential zones also received rainfall. Light showers were recorded in Malir Halt, Rafah-e-Aam, and surrounding areas, with rain also reported in Surjani Town and Korangi.
This shift in weather brought relief to residents after two days of intense heat and humidity.
“Even with a small amount of rain, the road outside my house is flooded, making it impossible for me to reach the office,” said a resident of Gulistan-e-Jauhar. Several roads across the city became waterlogged following the morning downpour.
The rainfall follows a forecast by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), which had predicted isolated showers in Karachi until August 23. With a strong monsoon system entering Sindh, the PMD warned of rain, thunderstorms, and isolated heavy falls in Karachi, Hyderabad, Jacobabad, Shikarpur, Larkana, Qambar Shahdadkot, Mirpurkhas, Sanghar, Badin, Thatta, Tharparkar, and surrounding regions.
Anticipating the situation, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah convened an emergency meeting on Monday to assess preparedness for the monsoon rains expected across the province, as reported by The News.
The CM instructed local governments, administrative bodies, and traffic police to remain on high alert and ensure strong coordination to minimise public inconvenience during heavy rainfall.
He emphasized that Karachi’s infrastructure must be ready to handle the expected downpour. Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab briefed the CM on efforts to improve drainage systems at 44 key choke points, with around 150 drains under town management undergoing de-silting to ensure smooth water flow.
The CM also directed the local government minister and mayor to take all necessary precautions to reduce disruptions and prioritise public safety.
Karachi is not alone in experiencing monsoon rains, as severe weather has caused devastation across northern Pakistan in recent days.
The national death toll from rain-related incidents has reached 660, with reports of casualties and destruction from every province and region.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has recorded the highest number of fatalities at 392, followed by Punjab with 164, Gilgit Baltistan (GB) with 32, Sindh with 29, Balochistan with 20, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) with 15, and Islamabad with eight.
Of the deceased, 394 were men, 95 women, and 171 children. Injuries nationwide total 935, with Punjab reporting the highest number (582), followed by KP (245), Sindh (40), GB (37), AJK (24), Balochistan (4), and Islamabad (3).
