Islamabad: In a deeply revered tradition, the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque has completed the ceremonial changing of the Kiswa—the black silk covering of the Holy Kaaba—on Thursday, marking the start of the Islamic year 1447 AH.

The new Kiswa was installed during the early hours of Muharram 1, coinciding with the beginning of the Hijri New Year. Crafted with meticulous care over nearly 11 months at the King Abdulaziz Complex for Holy Kaaba Kiswah in Mecca’s Umm Al Joud district, the new covering represents both spiritual renewal and artistic excellence.

The process, rooted in centuries-old Islamic tradition, began Wednesday afternoon after Asr prayer on the 29th of Dhu Al Hijjah, with the careful removal of the previous Kiswa. A skilled team of technicians and workers oversaw every step of the replacement.

The 2025 Kiswa comprises 47 intricately woven pieces of black silk and features 68 Quranic verses, beautifully embroidered with silver threads plated in 24-karat gold. Weighing around 1,415 kilograms, it is a remarkable testament to Islamic craftsmanship and devotion.

Held annually, the changing of the Kiswa carries profound spiritual meaning for Muslims worldwide, symbolizing reverence and renewal as the Islamic calendar begins anew. The ceremony was executed with precision and deep respect, reflecting Saudi Arabia’s unwavering commitment to preserving and honoring the sacred traditions of Islam.
