Judge Frank Caprio, Beloved TV Star, Dies at 88

Islamabad: Frank Caprio, the beloved former Chief Judge of the Providence Municipal Court and star of the popular television show Caught in Providence, has passed away at the age of 88 following a battle with pancreatic cancer.
Born on November 24, 1936, in Providence, Rhode Island, Caprio was the son of Italian immigrants Antonio and Filomena Caprio. He graduated from Providence College in 1958 and earned his law degree from Suffolk University Law School while working as a high school teacher. His early professional life included practicing law and serving on the Providence City Council from 1962 to 1968.
Appointed to the Providence Municipal Court in 1985, Caprio served as Chief Judge until his retirement in 2023. He gained worldwide acclaim through Caught in Providence, a courtroom television show that began on local TV and later gained national and online popularity. The program showcased Caprio’s signature blend of empathy and fairness in handling minor infractions, making him a viral sensation and earning the admiration of millions across the globe.
Outside the courtroom, Caprio made significant contributions to education. He chaired the Rhode Island Board of Governors for Higher Education and established numerous scholarships at Providence College, Suffolk University, and other institutions. His achievements were recognized with several honorary degrees and his induction into the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame.
Caprio is survived by his wife, Joyce, and their five children, including former Rhode Island General Treasurer Frank T. Caprio. His family expressed hope that his enduring legacy of compassion and humanity will continue to inspire acts of kindness in others.
