Jimmy Fallon’s Pixel 10 Hosting Draws Online Backlash

Mountain View: Google’s much-anticipated Pixel 10 launch event on Wednesday has sparked backlash online, with many viewers calling the celebrity-packed presentation “cringe” and “unwatchable.”
The event, hosted by late-night talk show star Jimmy Fallon, aimed to showcase Google’s latest smartphones and their AI-driven features. But Fallon’s awkward delivery, forced enthusiasm, and lack of technical understanding left many tech enthusiasts unimpressed.
At one point, Fallon attempted to hype up the Pixel’s IP68 water-resistance rating — a feature present since the 2018 Pixel 3 — shouting, “I P 6 8! I P 6 8!” The moment quickly circulated online as an example of the event’s overblown theatrics.
Viewers also criticized Google for relying heavily on celebrity appearances, including Fallon, NBA star Stephen Curry, podcaster Alex Cooper, and the Jonas Brothers, rather than focusing on real-world demonstrations of the technology. Reddit users compared the show to a “QVC-style sales pitch,” with exaggerated reactions and scripted banter between Fallon and Google executives.
“His warmth and humor didn’t translate in this setting — instead, it felt forced and out of place,” one commenter wrote of Fallon’s hosting.
Despite the missteps, Google unveiled several major updates, including deeper integration of its AI assistant Gemini into smartphones and augmented reality glasses, enhanced photo-editing tools, and new features such as Circle to Search.
While some segments, such as a discussion with photographer Andre D. Wagner and a natural appearance by Alex Cooper, were praised for their authenticity, much of the event was panned for being overly commercialized.
Industry observers noted that Google, in an attempt to differentiate from Apple’s minimalist launch style, may have gone too far in chasing mainstream attention. Many suggested the company would have been better served by showcasing its technology through trusted tech reviewers and creators.
The Pixel 10 and related hardware, including new earbuds and smartwatches, will now compete head-to-head with Apple’s latest lineup, with Google positioning AI as its key advantage.
