Mumbai: Spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar claimed nine wickets between them as India bowled out New Zealand for 235 on day one of the third Test on Friday.
After opting to bat first at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium in a bid to sweep the series, New Zealand saw solid contributions from Will Young, who scored 71, and Daryl Mitchell, who hit 82.
Jadeja led India’s attack with figures of 5-65, while Sundar took four wickets, including the final two — Mitchell and Ajaz Patel — wrapping up the innings in 65.4 overs in the final session.
Mitchell reached his half-century before tea and attempted to anchor the innings, sharing an 87-run fourth-wicket stand with Young before Sundar dismissed him. Jadeja, striking regularly, took two wickets in an over twice, achieving his 14th five-wicket haul in Tests.
Young reached his fifty shortly after lunch with a straight six off Sundar. Jadeja soon dismissed Young at slip and, within four balls, bowled out wicketkeeper Tom Blundell for a duck.
Fast bowler Akash Deep made the initial breakthrough, trapping left-handed opener Devon Conway lbw for four in the fourth over.
New Zealand skipper Tom Latham, who scored 28, attempted to steady the innings alongside Young in a 44-run second-wicket partnership before Sundar bowled him with a sharp delivery.
Sundar bowled left-handed Rachin Ravindra, who has been leading the series’ batting charts, for just five runs. New Zealand secured their first-ever Test series win on Indian soil last week with a victory in the second match in Pune.
