Iyer Sparkles as India Hold New Zealand to 300

Islamabad: India restricted New Zealand to 300 for 8 in the first ODI on a batting-friendly surface at the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara on Sunday, riding on a disciplined bowling effort and a moment of brilliance in the field from Shreyas Iyer.
The Black Caps were given a solid start by Devon Conway and Henry Nicholls, who added 117 runs for the opening wicket. Both batters brought up fluent half-centuries, putting the visitors firmly in control early in the innings.
However, India struck back through regular wickets, triggering a collapse that saw New Zealand slide from a commanding position to 198 for 5.
Daryl Mitchell then attempted to rebuild the innings alongside Michael Bracewell, and the pair added a valuable 39-run stand to steady the ship. Just as New Zealand looked set to accelerate in the death overs, India produced a game-changing moment on the field.
In the 43rd over, with Harshit Rana delivering a pinpoint yorker to Mitchell, the batter squeezed the ball out and called Bracewell back for a risky second run. Shreyas Iyer, stationed at long-on and making his return to international cricket after recovering from a spleen injury sustained in October last year, reacted sharply. Charging in from the boundary, Iyer picked up the ball cleanly and unleashed a one-handed direct hit at the non-striker’s end, catching Bracewell inches short of his crease.
The dismissal halted New Zealand’s momentum at a crucial stage, and India tightened the screws thereafter to limit the visitors to 300 for 8. Iyer’s effort sparked jubilant celebrations among his teammates and drew widespread praise on social media, underlining the impact of elite fielding in modern one-day cricket.
