Italy Qualifies for 2026 T20 World Cup, Makes Historic Debut

The Hague: Italy has secured a historic maiden berth at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, marking the nation’s first-ever appearance at a cricket World Cup.

Despite a loss to the Netherlands in their final group match, Italy progressed to the global showpiece event, thanks to a superior net run-rate over rivals Jersey.

Italy and Jersey both ended their campaigns in the Europe regional final with five points, but Italy’s ability to stretch the Dutch run chase beyond the 15th over was enough to edge ahead in the standings and seal qualification before the match concluded.

Batting first in The Hague, Italy struggled early, losing openers Justin Mosca and Emilio Gay in the first three overs. Captain Joe Burns fell soon after, leaving the side at 41 for 3.

Despite the setbacks, Ben Manenti (batting at No. 5) played a steadying knock, supported by Grant Stewart (25 off 16) and Anthony Mosca (13 not out), to guide Italy to a competitive 134 for 7 in their 20 overs.

The Netherlands responded with a dominant display. Openers Max O’Dowd and Michael Levitt put up 71 runs in just eight overs. Levitt was eventually dismissed for 34, but O’Dowd (55 not out) and skipper Scott Edwards (33 not out) saw their team home with 22 balls and eight wickets to spare.

Left-arm spinner Roelof van der Merwe starred with the ball for the Dutch, taking 3 for 15 and removing the dangerous Burns.

Earlier in the day, Jersey pulled off a dramatic one-wicket victory over Scotland. Chasing 134, Jersey stumbled from 81 for 1 to 129 for 9, before captain Charles Perchard and No. 11 Jake Dunford held their nerve to seal a last-ball win. However, their qualification hopes were dashed by Italy’s net run-rate advantage.

The result meant Scotland, who had featured in the last four T20 World Cups, were eliminated from contention.

Italy’s qualification was a result of strong team performances throughout the tournament. Ben Manenti played a pivotal role with the bat, while Harry Manenti emerged as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker, claiming eight wickets at an average of 9.62.

With Italy and the Netherlands joining the lineup, 15 teams have now confirmed their spots in the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Three more teams will qualify from the East Asia-Pacific region, with two additional spots to be decided in the upcoming Africa regional qualifier.
