New York: An Israeli military airstrike targeted the Al-Taba’een school in the Al-Daraj neighborhood of eastern Gaza early Saturday morning, resulting in the deaths of at least 100 Palestinians.
The bombing occurred while many were performing fajr prayers, leading to numerous casualties, according to reports from the Palestinian news agency Wafa.
Medics have struggled to reach all the victims, and the school, which was sheltering displaced civilians, also saw many injuries from the attack. Eyewitnesses described hearing screams from women and children but were unable to provide assistance.
This incident comes shortly after the announcement that the US is set to provide $3.5 billion to Israel for purchasing American military equipment, as part of a $14.1 billion supplemental bill passed by Congress in April.
Since October 7, 2023, nearly 40,000 Palestinians, including many women and children, have died, with over 91,700 injured due to the Israeli bombing campaign. Gaza remains in devastation, with a severe blockade affecting food, clean water, and medical supplies.
Israel faces accusations of genocide at the International Court of Justice (ICJ). The attack on Al-Taba’een School raises the total number of schools struck by the Israeli army in Gaza City over the past week to six.
Despite efforts by mediators from Egypt, the US, and Qatar to halt the violence and negotiate a cease-fire and hostage exchange, Israel continues its assault on Gaza.
This escalation follows retaliatory threats from Lebanon’s Hezbollah after the killing of its top commander, Fuad Shukr, in an Israeli airstrike on Beirut on July 30, and Iran’s threats after the assassination of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on July 31, which was also attributed to Israel.
