Beirut: Five Israeli missiles targeted and destroyed an eight-storey residential building in the heart of Beirut on Saturday, according to Lebanese state media.
The attack on Al-Mamoun Street in the Basta area left the Lebanese capital reeling from what has been described as a “horrific massacre.”
“Beirut, the capital, woke up to tragedy as the Israeli enemy’s air force completely destroyed a residential building,” the National News Agency reported.
AFP journalists on the ground confirmed hearing at least three large explosions in the city, which sent shockwaves across the densely populated area. The extent of casualties and damage is still being assessed as rescue teams work through the rubble.
The incident adds to escalating tensions in the region, with the international community calling for immediate de-escalation.
