Islamabad: Islamabad will witness the launch of its largest-ever eco-friendly ‘Cycle Track Project in January next year.

In the first phase of the project, various protected cycling tracks for citizens will be laid down alongside the Metro bus stations and Margalla Avenues.

“Nauman Khalid, a member of the Capital Development Authority overseeing technology and digitalization, revealed to a private news channel that Islamabad is gearing up to become more environmentally conscious. Khalid announced the imminent implementation of a cycling track project aimed at fostering healthy activities and easing traffic congestion.

The initiative aims to create a healthier cityscape while offering safe cycling paths for women, children, and seniors. The proposed 150-kilometre cycling track, estimated at Rs 1.265 billion, will line major city avenues. Additionally, plans include the introduction of electric and pedalling cycles in the project’s final phase, a collaborative effort with the IT sector.

The CDA has formulated a project plan (PC-I) for this purpose. The matter is set for deliberation in the upcoming CDA board meeting next week. The PC-I highlights the project’s potential to encourage increased public transport usage among Islamabad residents while outlining its numerous benefits.

Cycling tracks encourage physical activity, offering a safe space for residents to engage in exercise. Cycling is a low-impact aerobic activity that promotes cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength, and flexibility. Encouraging such healthy activities contributes to a healthier population overall.

By providing dedicated cycling lanes, the initiative aims to reduce the number of vehicles on the road. This can ease traffic congestion, particularly during peak hours, and alleviate the burden on existing road infrastructure.

Cycling is an eco-friendly mode of transportation, emitting zero greenhouse gases. Encouraging cycling as an alternative to motor vehicles can significantly reduce carbon emissions and contribute to the city’s efforts in combating air pollution and climate change.
