Islamabad: The government is planning to establish a modern slaughterhouse and wholesale meat market in the federal capital at an estimated cost of Rs3 billion to improve food safety, regulate slaughtering practices and modernize the meat supply chain.
According to official documents, the project titled “Establishment of State-of-the-Art Slaughterhouse and Wholesale Meat Market, Islamabad” aims to ensure hygienic and veterinary-supervised slaughtering while introducing modern meat-processing and cold-chain facilities to maintain quality during storage and transportation.
The project will be implemented jointly by the Islamabad Capital Territory Administration, Capital Development Authority and the Livestock and Dairy Development Board under the Ministry of National Food Security and Research.

Planned to be developed in Sector I-11/4, the facility will include a centralized slaughterhouse operating under veterinary supervision, a wholesale meat market, cold-chain logistics, wastewater treatment plants and systems for managing solid waste and animal by-products.
Officials said the initiative is designed to address concerns over unregulated slaughtering practices and to improve disease control through proper monitoring and hygiene standards.
The project will also introduce digital tracking systems to ensure traceability in the meat supply chain, helping authorities monitor production, storage and distribution more effectively.
Scheduled to run over three years from July 2026 to June 2029, the project aligns with the government’s development priorities under the “Uraan Pakistan 2024-29” framework and the National Agriculture Innovation and Growth Programme.
Authorities believe the facility will not only ensure safer meat for consumers but also support the livestock sector by encouraging the production of processed and higher-value meat products while creating employment opportunities in processing, logistics and related industries.
