Is There Link Between Vitamin K Deficiency & Lung Diseases?
News Desk
Islamabad: A recent study has revealed that people who are deficient in vitamin K are more likely to experience diminished lung function, resulting in asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and wheezing.
According to research published in the medical journal ERJ Open Research, vitamin K deficiency has been linked to lung health.
Vitamin K is naturally present in leafy green vegetables, vegetable oils, various fruits and cereal grains. While its role in aiding blood clotting and wound healing is established, its impact on lung health remains relatively unexplored by researchers.
Experts conducted research on more than 4,000 people to evaluate the effects of vitamin K deficiency on the lungs. They asked them various questions, including checking the level of vitamin K in all the volunteers and also evaluating the medical complications they faced.
After testing and questioning all the volunteers, the experts concluded that vitamin K deficiency can lead to lung problems and even difficulty breathing.
Researcher Dr Torkil Jespersen stated, “To our knowledge, this is a first-of-its-kind study investigating the connection between Vitamin K and lung function within a broad general population. Our outcomes propose that Vitamin K might contribute to maintaining optimal lung health.”
According to experts, vitamin K works for better blood circulation in the body; it prevents blood clotting but if there is a lack of this vitamin, the blood starts to clot which can affect the lungs.
However, D. Jespersen further mentioned that while our findings do not inherently modify the existing guidelines for Vitamin K intake, they do underscore the necessity for additional exploration.
Specifically, we need to investigate whether certain groups, such as individuals grappling with lung ailments, might derive benefits from Vitamin K supplementation,” Dr Torkil added.
