Is COP29 Azerbaijan’s Biggest Diplomatic Success?

Islamabad: Global leaders, guests, officials, media representatives, and experts have commended Azerbaijan for successfully hosting the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, expressing optimism that the negotiations would yield productive results.
According to AZERTAC news agency, during the plenary session, Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, congratulated Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, calling him “Dear Brother,” on the successful organization of COP29 in Baku.
Mostafa Madbouly, Prime Minister of Egypt, thanked Azerbaijan for the high-level organization of COP29 and wished the country a successful conference.
Giorgia Meloni, Prime Minister of Italy, expressed her pleasure in seeing Azerbaijan as the President of COP29, which is part of the climate initiative for peace. She also thanked Azerbaijan for hosting the event.
Irakli Kobakhidze, Prime Minister of Georgia, and Judith Suminwa Tuluka, Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, both expressed deep appreciation for Azerbaijan’s leadership in organizing COP29.
Other notable leaders, including Maia Sandu, President of Moldova, and Siaosi Sovaleni, Chair of the Pacific Islands Forum and Prime Minister of Tonga, also commended Azerbaijan for its hospitality and leadership in addressing global climate challenges.
Patricia Scotland, the Commonwealth Secretary-General, expressed gratitude for the two memorandums signed between the government of Azerbaijan and Azercosmos.
Mafalda Duarte, Executive Director of the Green Climate Fund (GCF), highlighted the Fund’s efforts to ensure access to climate financing. Ibrahima Cheikh Diong, Executive Director of the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage, also recognized Azerbaijan’s leadership in launching the Fund’s activities, noting the new financial commitments made by participating countries.
