Islamabad: Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (DPC) has opened a formal inquiry into Elon Musk’s platform X over its use of personal data from European users to train its artificial intelligence chatbot, Grok.

Acting as the lead regulator in the EU for X—due to the platform’s European headquarters being located in Ireland—the DPC announced the investigation on Friday.

The probe focuses on whether X lawfully processed publicly accessible posts from EU users to develop its large language models (LLMs), collectively known as Grok. The DPC stated that the inquiry aims to assess the platform’s compliance with key provisions of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), particularly around data processing legality and transparency.

Grok is a suite of generative AI models created by Musk’s team and integrated into the X platform. The latest inquiry follows previous concerns raised in 2023, when the DPC took legal action against X after it began using personal data from public posts without clear user consent. That case was suspended after X agreed to halt the data usage and cooperate with regulators.

Despite that agreement, X has continued advancing its AI technologies, prompting renewed scrutiny from the DPC. The commission emphasized that the current investigation will closely examine whether the platform is upholding EU data protection standards in its ongoing AI development.
