Tehran: Iran has confirmed the martyrdom of Ali Larijani, its National Security Advisor and one of the country’s most prominent political figures, following an attack in eastern Tehran.

According to Iranian authorities and Arab media reports, Larijani was targeted while visiting his daughter.

Officials also confirmed that his son, Morteza Larijani, was martyred in the same incident.

The announcement was echoed through Larijani’s official account on X, where a brief statement read that “a servant of God has met God.”

Earlier, a handwritten message attributed to Larijani had been shared online, paying tribute to martyrs. The development comes amid escalating tensions in the region, after Israel claimed responsibility for targeting the senior Iranian official.

Earlier, Israeli media reported that the strike was carried out during overnight attacks, with the country’s defense minister asserting that Larijani had been “eliminated.”

Initial confusion surrounded the incident, as Iranian state media had earlier stopped short of confirming his death, even as explosions were reported across central areas of Tehran.

At 67, Ali Larijani was widely regarded as a central figure in Iran’s post-revolution political landscape, emerging after the Iranian Revolution.

Belonging to a powerful religious and political family, he played a key role in shaping Iran’s domestic and foreign policy.

Larijani served for 12 years as Speaker of the Iranian parliament (Shura Council) and was also the country’s chief negotiator on its nuclear program.

Though aligned with conservative politics, he was often viewed as a relatively moderate voice within the establishment and a recurring contender in presidential politics.

Reacting to the assassination, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi emphasized that the killing of senior officials would not weaken the Iranian state.

In an interview with Arab media, Araqchi said Iran’s political system remains resilient, built on stable institutions that are not dependent on any single individual. While acknowledging the influence of key figures, he stressed that the country’s structure ensures continuity despite such losses.

Meanwhile, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) issued a strongly worded statement condemning the attack and vowing retaliation.

Describing Larijani as a “prominent figure, thinker and revolutionary politician,” the Guards declared that his blood, along with that of other martyrs, would become a source of national strength and awakening.

The statement underscored that such sacrifices would not be forgotten.

The assassination has further inflamed an already volatile regional environment, with tensions between Iran, the United States, and Israel continuing to rise.

Reports of unrest within Tehran, coupled with uncertainty over the full scope of the attacks, have added to the sense of instability.

As Iran mourns one of its most influential leaders, the implications of his killing are expected to reverberate across both domestic politics and the broader Middle East.
