Ahmedabad: In a display of sheer dominance, India defeated New Zealand by 96 runs in the final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 to claim the title for the third time, cementing their status as the most successful team in T20 World Cup history.
The victory was not just about lifting the trophy. India became the first team to defend a T20 World Cup title, the first team to win the T20 World Cup on home soil, and the only team to win the tournament three times, having previously lifted the trophy in 2007 and 2024.
A One-Sided Final
After winning the toss, New Zealand invited India to bat first. The hosts capitalized fully, posting a mammoth 255/5 in 20 overs, leaving the Kiwi bowlers struggling throughout.
The Indian innings featured a brilliant display of power-hitting and aggressive stroke play.
Sanju Samson led the charge with 89 off 46 balls, smashing three sixes off Rachin Ravindra in the 14th over. Ishan Kishan (54 off 25) and Abhishek Sharma (52 off 21) also made significant contributions, while the lower order added crucial runs, including Shivam Dube’s 28 off 8 balls.
For New Zealand, Jimmy Neesham took 3 wickets, while Matt Henry and Rachan Ravindra claimed one each.
In response, the New Zealand batsmen were unable to match India’s intensity. The entire Kiwi lineup was bowled out for 159 in the 19th over, with Tim Seifert scoring 52 and Mitchell Santner 47. None of the other batsmen reached double figures.
Bowling Masterclass
India’s bowlers delivered a clinical performance. Jasprit Bumrah was the star, taking 4 wickets, while Axar Patel picked up 3, and Hardik Pandya, Varun Chakravarthy, and Abhishek Sharma contributed one each. Bumrah’s performance earned him Player of the Match, while Sanju Samson was named Player of the Tournament.

- First team to win the World Cup on home soil.
- First team to surpass 100 sixes in a single World Cup edition, finishing with 102 sixes, with Sanju Samson’s innings providing a highlight.
