Chennai: India kept their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup campaign alive with a commanding 72-run victory over Zimbabwe in a high-scoring Super Eights encounter at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Thursday, a result that knocked the Chevrons out of the tournament and confirmed South Africa’s place in the semi-finals.

With their first Super Eights win secured, India moved to two points from two matches, setting up a decisive final group clash against West Indies in Kolkata on Sunday, effectively a virtual quarter-final with a semi-final berth at stake.

After being put in to bat, India delivered one of the most explosive batting performances of the tournament, piling up 256/4 in 20 overs. The innings was built on aggressive partnerships and a powerful late surge that left Zimbabwe facing a daunting chase.

Openers Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma provided a brisk start, adding 48 runs in under four overs. Although Samson fell for 24, Sharma maintained the tempo and stitched together a 72-run stand with Ishan Kishan, who scored 38 off 24 balls.

Sharma, who had endured a lean run earlier in the tournament, bounced back in style with a 30-ball 55 featuring four sixes and four boundaries. Captain Suryakumar Yadav added a quickfire 33 before the finishing pair of Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya unleashed a blistering assault.

Pandya smashed an unbeaten 50 off just 23 deliveries, while Varma remained not out on 44 from 16 balls. Their unbroken 84-run partnership ensured India crossed the 250-run mark and seized complete control of the contest.

In reply, Zimbabwe showed resilience but never seriously threatened the target. Brian Bennett played a lone hand, scoring a superb unbeaten 97 from 59 balls, including eight fours and six sixes. However, with limited support from the middle order, Zimbabwe finished at 184/6.

Arshdeep Singh led India’s disciplined bowling effort with figures of 3 for 24, while Varun Chakravarthy, Shivam Dube and Axar Patel chipped in with a wicket each to seal a comprehensive victory.

The defeat ended Zimbabwe’s hopes of progressing to the knockouts, while India now turn their focus to a must-win showdown that will determine their path to the semi-finals.
