India Edge Past Sri Lanka by 59 Runs in Women’s Cup Opener
News Desk
Guwahati: India overcame a mid-innings collapse to post a commanding 59-run (DLS-adjusted) win over Sri Lanka in the opening match of the Women’s ODI World Cup 2025.
Batting first in a rain-reduced 47-over match, India recovered from 124 for 6 to finish on 269 for 8. Amanjot Kaur struck a resilient 57 off 56 balls, sharing a crucial 103-run seventh-wicket partnership with Deepti Sharma, who scored a run-a-ball 53. Sneh Rana’s late assault—28 off 15 deliveries—propelled India into an imposing total.
Deepti Sharma starred with the ball as well, claiming 3 for 54 to derail Sri Lanka’s chase. Sneh Rana also impressed with the ball, ending as the most economical bowler and taking a late wicket.
Wickets were shared among India’s frontline bowlers, including Kranti Goud and Shree Charani, highlighting the team’s depth in all-rounders.

Sri Lanka, chasing a revised target of 271, struggled to maintain the required scoring rate despite a steady start. Chamari Athapaththu top-scored with 43, while Inoka Ranaweera’s 4 for 46 kept India’s innings in check. However, repeated dropped catches, particularly of Amanjot Kaur, proved costly for the visitors.
India’s top order had faltered early, losing Smriti Mandhana and then experiencing a mid-innings slump where four wickets fell for four runs. However, the late-order partnership between Amanjot and Deepti turned the game around, capitalizing on Sri Lanka’s fielding lapses.
The hosts ultimately set a defendable total and controlled the remainder of the match, highlighting both resilience under pressure and the value of their all-rounders. India will take confidence from the performance, while Sri Lanka will rue missed opportunities in the field.
Scorecard:
India: 269/8 (Amanjot 57, Deepti 53, Ranaweera 4-46)
Sri Lanka: 211 (Athapaththu 43, Deepti 3-54, Rana 2-32)
